Objective The students will be able to explain that some organisms have adaptations that enable them to move from one medium to another (dragonflies begin life in the water –> move to the land –> then fly in the air)
Procedure

  1. Invite a student to draw a picture of what they think a dragonfly looks like. Now invite the remaining students to draw a picture in the air with their finger of an imaginary insect.
  2. Ask students, “Does a dragonfly have bones? (no) How do you know? (A dragonfly is an insect. Insects do not have bones)
  3. Explain that the life cycle of a dragonfly is very different than a sea turtle.  Young insects are called nymphs.  Show the picture card of a nymph. Nymphs look like their parents BUT do not have wings. Nymphs shed their outside covering many times as they grow.
  4. Ask, “Where did the sea turtle lay its eggs?” (in the sand). Well, dragonflies lay their eggs in the water. A nymph hatches from the dragonfly egg.
  5. Ask, where did the sea turtle go after it hatched? (in the water)  Well, at first the nymph lives in the water, but then it crawls to the land.  This is opposite from the sea turtle.
  6. Point out: The nymph will shed its covering a last time. Now it is an adult dragonfly with its wings to fly.  Now it may lay its own eggs.
  7. Point out: The cycle will happen over again.

  • Students will color, cut, and paste the life cycle of a dragonfly in the correct order.
